  19. announced the release of WhiteLight/Engineer 1.1. Major new
  20. functionality includes object linking, scripting, and savable
  21. workspaces, as well as 71 other enhancements. Release 1.1 runs on
  22. NeXT, Inc.'s NEXTSTEP operating environment for Intel and Motorola
  23. processors.

  25. WhiteLight/Engineer addresses a fundamental problem shared by every
  26. large company: The complexity and dynamics of the business have
  27. outgrown the ability of current technology to deliver instantly the
  28. information that management needs to run the business.

  30. WhiteLight/Engineer is the first software product that enables a
  31. company's management and staff to build a shared model of the
  32. business from a common library of business objects and their
  33. computational relationships.

  37. ready to partition and deploy as the company's financial planning,

  81. WhiteLight supplies seven libraries of 1200 "intelligent business
  82. objects" that are common to many businesses, in categories such as
  83. finance, organization, region, time, and currency. These objects
  84. are intelligent in that they "know" how they computationally relate
  85. to other objects. For example, "1993" knows that it is the sum of
  86. "January" through "December". "Shareholders' Equity" knows that it
  87. is "Assets" minus "Liabilities". Customers easily customize these
  88. libraries and add other libraries specific to their business, such
  89. as product and customer lists.

  91. Users create applications by mixing and matching objects from their
  92. libraries. They use a "point and click" methodology; there is no
  93. procedural code (e.g., macros) in WhiteLight/Engineer. Further,
  94. because objects know how they computationally relate to other
  95. objects, applications mostly build themselves. Creating reports is
  96. similarly straightforward, since the "Income Statement" object
  97. knows which financial objects to present.

  99. Small end-user/developer teams design and deploy fully-operational
  100. applications, tailored to business requirements, within weeks of
  101. licensing the software. By reusing common business objects,
  102. end-users handle many of their own maintenance updates and generate
  103. their own reports, in minutes. End-users can also build small
  104. applications in days.

  106. WhiteLight/Engineer builds on NEXTSTEP's object-oriented
  107. environment. Business users realize the power of object-oriented
  108. programming without becoming programmers. The software hides
  109. powerful but arcane object-oriented concepts such as encapsulation,
  110. inheritance and polymorphism under a graphical interface that
  111. speaks the language of the business user. Combined with
  112. WhiteLight's libraries of business objects, the result is a
  113. development and user environment that is exceptionally productive.

  116. First, they are extremely flexible because users can add, modify
  117. and delete business objects at will. Second, they handle complexity
  118. with ease, because the complexity problem is delegated to the
  119. business objects. Third, they provide clear and unambiguous
  120. information because the values, sources and uses of every business
  121. object are always available in the users' own terminology.

  124. entire applications across the business. Simply by swapping a few
  125. business objects, you can re-engineer an application for a new use
  126. or a new set of users. For example, by swapping "budget" for
  127. "actual", you can begin to turn a financial reporting application
  128. into a budgeting application. By swapping months for years, you can
  129. also turn it into a strategic planning application," said Mr.

  134. day. We just need their data, samples of their reports, and two
  135. hours of their time. The prototype will include their numbers,
  136. their account names, and their business structures. It will include
  137. up to 50,000 values, of which 80% may be calculated," said Mr.

  140. "One customer built a complete budget system for their
  141. international business sector in six weeks. They tell us that, for
  142. the first time, they can understand the multi-dimensional impact of
  143. their decisions. A consolidation and reporting process that took
  144. six people eight weeks last year, one person did in four days this
  145. year," Mr. Goodman continued.

  149. spreadsheet applications. Spreadsheets are versatile personal
  150. productivity tools, but impractical at scale. Large-scale
  151. spreadsheet applications are inefficient, illogical, prone to

  153. collapse under stress," said Mr. Goodman. "Customers also replace
  154. budgeting, consolidation and other packaged applications that do
  155. not have WhiteLight/Engineer's ability to keep up with the
